San Francisco Transbay Development Program, also known as the Transit Center District Plan, has been hard at work redeveloping the neighborhood around the site of Transbay Transit Center, including the Financial District and South of Market. The Transbay Center is poised to replace the Transbay Terminal in San Francisco that was demolished to make way for a newer transportation hub that anchors state of the art skyscrapers, most notably the SalesForce Tower.
About the Salesforce Tower and Transbay Terminal
The upcoming Salesforce Tower was earlier called Transbay Tower. With a height of over a thousand feet, the skyscraper which has been crowned at 415 Mission Street South of Market in Downtown San Francisco is adjacent to the site of the Transit Center. The Salesforce Tower is a mixed-use development making space for offices, residences, retail and of course transportation. It is pegged to be the tallest tower in the city and new icon of the skyline. Nine storeys at the crown of the skyscraper will have electronic sculpture designed by Jim Campbell. The fixture will showcase abstract videos in low resolution, filmed in San Francisco every day. It would become the tallest piece of public art in the world.
The upcoming Transbay Transit Center will be replacing the old Transbay Terminal. The new terminal is expected to become the ‘Grand Central of the West’. It is being developed at the cost of $4.5 billion. The terminal will cater to a Caltrain extension and an about to be developed Bay Area section of the proposed High-Speed Rail. The new Transbay Terminal with five levels will have a rooftop park open to the public spanning more than five acres. One level is going to serve as the platforms, the one above will be the entrance at the street level and other levels will have offices and retail space. One level at the transit center will cater to local bus services including Muni and AC Transit, SamTrans and Golden Gate Transit. Amtrak and Greyhound will also find berths on the deck.
